Wonderska @ Lido 30/07/11

Forget a generic get together to celebrate 10 years of making unique customised clothes in Berlin.  A drag Queen fronted ska band and a fashion show catwalk in the middle of a music venue should do the trick. Killerbeast made the right choice to put Wonderska, who created a chilled out atmosphere and fitted well with the eccentric philopsophy of Killerbeast.
Essentially, Wonderska are three women with trumpets, standing in a line, with two-tone sweat bands on their arm and and a huge smile on their faces. Add to this a drummer, bassist and what appears to be the front woman, singing in a cool and casual tone, you have a fun band embracing equality and sexuality. But the ‘front woman’ is quickly pushed to the side when the drag queen comes on and steals all eye contact. She walks on  stage slowly and coyly, stopping to give sexy glances before she sings with a deep, audacious tone.
It’s happy ska with simple riffs and drum beats which brings out the skanker in the more enthusiastic people, but really it is just head bopping ska. They cover familiar songs by Dawn Penn and Babylon Zoo, giving them a unique sound with a German accent, which is comical and encourages people to dance. They finish standing in a line and bow in unison which leads to a raucous applause. Quite simply, they just want to have as much fun as they can and show their pride to be in the band with frequent outbursts of  ‘Wonderska!’
It’s much more than a gig. It’s an entertaining show that will make your eyes dart from one side of the stage to another It certainly warmed people up for the fashion show.
